The Woodlands has no shortage of great restaurants, but every once in a while, a new addition brings something genuinely different to the community. Phat Eatery Woodlands is one of those places.

Located in Grogan’s Mill Village Center at 2290 Buckthorne Place, Phat Eatery specializes in Malaysian cuisine and Southeast Asian-inspired dishes, bringing flavors to The Woodlands that are still relatively uncommon in the area.

From Katy to The Woodlands

Phat Eatery began in Katy Asian Town in 2018 under chef Alex Au-Yeung, whose cooking earned considerable recognition in the Houston food community. In 2022, Au-Yeung was named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: Texas.

Opening a second—and much larger—Phat Eatery in The Woodlands became one of his goals. Sadly, Au-Yeung passed away from cancer in March 2024, before he could see the completed restaurant open its doors.

His longtime colleagues Kevin Lee and Marvin He continued the project, and the new Phat Eatery officially opened in The Woodlands on June 26, 2024—the sixth anniversary of the original restaurant.

That history makes the restaurant more than simply another addition to the local dining scene. The Woodlands location represents the continuation of its founder’s vision and culinary legacy.

What Kind of Food Is Phat Eatery?

For anyone unfamiliar with Malaysian food, Phat Eatery is an approachable place to experience it.

The menu draws heavily from the street-food and hawker-style cooking found throughout Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

Among the dishes the restaurant has become known for are beef rendang, curry laksa, nasi lemak, sizzling egg tofu and roti canai, along with stir-fried noodles, rice dishes, vegetables and house-made dim sum.

One of the best-known dishes is roti canai, a flaky flatbread served with curry for dipping. Beef rendang is another signature—a slow-cooked, deeply seasoned beef dish that has become one of Phat Eatery’s most recognized offerings.

The Woodlands restaurant also allowed the team to go beyond what was possible at the smaller original location, including a greater emphasis on dim sum and Chinese-style barbecue.

A Much Bigger Phat Eatery

The restaurant took over the former Fuddruckers location in Grogan’s Mill Village Center, but the interior was completely transformed.

The large space features an open kitchen, full bar, private dining areas and colorful design elements inspired by Asian night markets. Chinese lanterns, neon-style market signage and warm red and orange accents help give the restaurant an energetic atmosphere.

There is also a particularly meaningful feature near the entrance: a portrait of Alex Au-Yeung commissioned by his friends at No Label Brewing, serving as a tribute to the chef whose idea ultimately became the restaurant.

Another Reason to Visit Grogan’s Mill

Phat Eatery’s arrival is also part of the continuing evolution of Grogan’s Mill Village Center, one of the original commercial centers in The Woodlands.

For residents accustomed to driving farther into Houston—or even to Katy—to find a wider variety of authentic Asian cuisines, having a restaurant with Phat Eatery’s reputation right here in The Woodlands adds something special to the local restaurant mix.

Whether you’re already familiar with Malaysian food or have never tried it, Phat Eatery offers an opportunity to branch out beyond the usual restaurant choices without leaving The Woodlands.

And behind the food is a story worth knowing: a chef with a vision for bringing his cooking north to The Woodlands, and a team of friends determined to make sure that vision became a reality.
